English

Within English, we are passionately committed to supporting all our students to achieve, with a sharp focus on fostering a genuine love of reading and writing for pleasure.

We want all of our students to see themselves reflected in the curriculum, so, alongside studying more traditional texts, we constantly strive to diversify our selection of novels, poems, plays and non-fiction texts in order to engage and include at every key stage.

Creativity and oracy are at the heart of the curriculum and students will be empowered to speak and write in a range of forms and registers, developing increasing levels of sophistication and independence as they progress through the school.

Enrichment opportunities

We aim to support learning in English lessons through frequent trips to the theatre or events that help bring our texts to life. Previous trips have included attending the Globe Deutschbank Shakespeare series, visiting the Regent’s Park outdoor theatre for plays such as ‘Noughts and Crosses’ and ‘The Tempest’, and the National Theatre productions of ‘Ballet Shoes’ and ‘The Crucible’.

At KS3 and KS4, we were thrilled to have writers visit us to give talks to our students, including poets Raymond Antrobus and Catherine Johnson.

Previous Special Activity events at the end of the year for KS3 have encompassed the students’ love of murder mysteries, poetry, creative writing, Drama and Shakespeare. Current clubs where students can get involved in writing include Magazine Club and Creative Writing Club, both led and run by students themselves.

At KS5, theatre trips take place wherever possible to support the core texts of each class, such as ‘The Duchess of Malfi’ and ‘Hamlet’.
