Oxford Union Schools Debating Finals Day
On Saturday 12 March, four students from Year 12 (Martha, Ines, Frida and Belle) travelled to Oxford with Mr Gunn for the Oxford Union Schools Debating Finals day.
The day sees the best 120 schools debating teams from around the world compete in the prestigious Oxford Union building.
The CSG students were split into two teams and debated the following motions over the course of the day;
- This House believes that social media's adoption of child-only versions of their platforms (Youtube Kids, Messenger Kids, Instagram for Kids) does more harm than good
- This House would implement a universal basic income
- This House believes that parents should not inflate their childrens' expectations of what they are capable of achieving
- This House regrets the rise of citizen journalism
This was the first time we have ever had two teams compete at Finals Day and the day was a thoroughly memorable experience for all involved. The four students gave an excellent account of themselves and the school, again showing the strength of debating at CSG.
At the end of the day, the results were announced and Frida and Belle (Camden 2) had made it to the Novice Final - the top four teams composed of debaters who haven’t made it to finals day before - a truly incredible achievement. This is also the second year in a row CSG has had a team in the Novice Final.
They debated the following motion in front of an audience in the impressive environment of the Oxford Union Library;
This House would outsource criminal justice policy to unelected experts instead of elected politicians
At the end of the day, it was announced that Frida and Belle had won the Novice Final - fantastic result!
The day wrapped up a fantastic year of debating competitions for the Sixth Form debaters, with considerable successes - a testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of all students involved in debating- well done!
