Explaining a concept or lesson learnt at school to a parent can significantly reinforce a child's understanding and retention of the material. Here's how it can be advantageous:

  1. When a child teaches a parent what they have learnt, they are forced to organise their thoughts and explain the concept coherently. This process helps them consolidate the information, solidifying their grasp of the subject matter.
  2. As the child attempts to explain the concept, they may encounter areas where their understanding is incomplete or unclear. This recognition of knowledge gaps can prompt them to seek clarification from their teacher or consult additional resources, ultimately enhancing their comprehension.
  3. Teaching requires active recall of learnt information, a more effective learning strategy than a passive review. This active retrieval process strengthens connections in their brain associated with the learnt material, making it more accessible in the future.
  4. By explaining the concept to a parent, the child becomes more aware of their thought processes and strategies for learning and understanding. This can help them identify and apply effective learning techniques in future situations.
  5. Successfully explaining a concept to a parent can boost the child's confidence in their abilities. This increased self-assurance can motivate the child to engage more actively in their learning process.
  6. Teaching a parent requires the child to communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. This practice can enhance the child's communication skills, which are valuable in academic and professional settings.

The parent's role in this process is crucial. They should aim to create a supportive and encouraging environment, ask questions to facilitate deeper understanding and provide constructive feedback. This collaborative effort can turn the teaching experience into a rewarding and enriching learning opportunity for both the child and the parent.

Year 9 Fresh Pasta Making

Year 9 have been learning about the importance of pasta as a staple food in helping families keep costs down in meal preparation.

They also explored how a failed attempt at securing investment from the Dragon’s Den in 2018 has gone from strength to strength, delivering boxes of authentic, freshly made Italian pasta straight to your doorstep.

Students made lengths of beautifully elastic pasta dough and experimented with making tagliatelle, farfalle and tortellini. Making fresh pasta is a fun and unique skill to develop and making it at home is a much more cost-effective way of enjoying fresh pasta!

Well done year 9!

Boxing Trip

On Wednesday, the Boxing Club went on a trip to The Islington Boxing Centre. We got the chance to meet some amazing female boxing coaches and boxers. We had an intense 2 hour training session and had a lot of fun.

We tried many different workouts and drills to work on our boxing, strength and speed. After training, we had a Q&A session with the boxers, and they told us some very interesting things about their boxing experiences and careers. It was very interesting to see what they thought and how passionate they were. We hope to see them again soon!

Ms Cohen’s Sixth Form Writers

We have had a really fruitful term in the Sixth Form Writing Enrichment run by Ms Cohen, with a great selection of writing in different styles produced by our talented students. Here are a couple of recent highlights for you to enjoy!
Ms Cohen

This first is by Zoe in Y12, who writes:
“
The task was to write in the Villanelle form, after reading the poem “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas. This poem is about noticing, appreciating and loving every aspect of a place, a time, a person until there’s nothing left to give and nothing left to love.”

Ceilings

Learn all the ceilings by heart
Every crack and line become your book

Love until it falls apart

Open your soul so when we part

I know you’ve understood

Learn all the ceilings by heart

The valley and the sky are for my sweetheart

Every rounded pebble in the little brook

Love until it falls apart

In the corners of the arches where we start

Remember what you gave and what they took
Learn all the ceiling by heart

Yes, the old men know the edges of their art
So, you do more than solely look

Love until it falls apart

Hold your lasting hope steadfast
Know that it was faith that they mistook

Yes, learn all the ceilings by heart

Love until it falls apart

Now here is Goldie Y12, explaining the task and her poem:
“
This was a dialogic poetry task where we had to create a poem that could be read in multiple ways, both vertically and horizontally, changing the poem’s perspective depending on how you read it. I was especially proud of this one, since it was challenging to work on both poems at the same time, keeping them connected but still separate.”

DofE Awards

These students did an early training session for the Bronze award DofE. Unlike the rest of the expedition group who are doing their day of training on the 28 June, we went on Wednesday so that they could enter a competition as finalists in a national event.

What did we do? We walked the Heath finding out that compasses have a limited use in guiding us. Trees get in the way, so do ponds and hedges. There were tick points, handrails and areal features for us all to get our heads around. We walked over 8000 steps, made 100ms of ascent and managed to eat a little lunch before getting back to school 10 minutes late, so sorry staff.
