Knowledge Maps

Knowledge Maps are like Brain Dumps we saw last week: students try to recall everything they know about a topic on a blank paper. The difference is that they connect ideas visually rather than in continuous prose. As with Brain Dumps, students can provide themselves with a list of key terms to make things easier. After they’ve finished, they look at their class notes, textbook and/or revision guide and check that the work is correct. They should then look at what they’ve forgotten and/or misunderstood and focus on this. Below are two examples from Y7 Science and Y11 Chemistry (Combined Science) - they're just as powerful in many other subjects.

Black History Month Poetry Competition

Congratulations to the winners of our ‘Black History Month’ poetry competition.

The KS4 winner is Christyvie in 10R and the KS3 winner is Naima in 8R. Their poems are beautiful and powerful evocations of the experiences of black women now and throughout history, and we thank them for their bravery and honesty in writing them.
Both winners were presented in assembly with a copy of David Olusoga’s book, ‘Black and British.’

Refuge - by Christyvie 10R

I salute you - by Naima 8R

TeenTethics TeenTech Workshop

Year 9 STEM and year 10 DT students took part in an exciting workshop about ethics in the design of products led by Maggie Philbin and a team of industry professionals. Maggie has worked on a wide range of science, medical and technology programmes, from Swap Shop to Tomorrow’s World. Interestingly, many of the everyday gadgets we now take for granted were demonstrated on live television for the very first time by Maggie – the first truly mobile phone, the first car navigation system, even the first supermarket barcode reader! As co-founder of TeenTech, she aims to encourage young women to pursue careers and reach top positions by understanding more about the real opportunities in Science, Technology and Engineering.

Students took part in a range of fun activities; future gazing into emerging tech, and thinking about how these innovations could hit the headlines should ethical considerations not be taken into account. Thinking through how ethics impact our every day decisions and how fundamental these issues are to our society and future was a really challenging and intellectual way to explore design, science and tech.  Their ideas will hopefully contribute to the foundation of a Young Persons Charter for Ethical Innovation! This was a fantastic opportunity and the sessions were really fun and enjoyable!

Year 12 Photography

The Y12 Photography class visited three different galleries exhibiting a range of photographers to draw inspiration for their own work.

We visited The Photographers Gallery where we viewed the Daido Moriyama exhibition ‘A Retrospective’. Daido Moriyama is a Japanese photographer who is best known for his black and white street photography and association with the avant garde photography magazine ‘Provoke’. He said "What we photographers can do, and should do, is capture with our own eyes those fragments of reality that are completely impossible to capture with existing words, and continue actively to create materials which confront those words and thoughts." - Editorial text in Provoke #2. Moriyama’s work can inspire our own in both his technique and style, and in his process of documenting his environment and finding inspiration wherever he goes.

Next, we went to the National Portrait Gallery, to view the Taylor Wessing Prize. This exhibition showcases selected submissions of the portrait photography competition, which is open to both amateur and professional photographers. This was a fascinating exhibition, as we could see a wide range of photographers' work, and draw inspiration from their different styles and interpretations. I personally found Ruth Samuels work inspiring, as she aims to amplify marginalised voices and empower women through her work. There were many insightful works that draw on a range of themes using the genre of portraiture photography.

Lastly, we went to the Centre of British Photography. One exhibition on show was Charlie Philips: ‘How Great Thou Art’ which documents 50 years of African Caribbean funerals in London. It offers a modern and historical cultural insight and provides an example of the theme of documentary photography. Other exhibitors in the gallery included Dorothy Bohm ‘London Street Markets’ and  Arpita Shan ‘Modern Muse’. Overall, it was great to gain an insight into the possibilities for using Photography as a voice.

Camden FoodBank

Camden Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust group of foodbanks in the U.K., supporting adults and children in food poverty in the borough of Camden since 2012.

The Camden borough has a significant number of homeless people and people who live in great deprivation. Every day, people go hungry for different reasons, including family breakdown, job loss and mental health problems. During the past two years, Camden Foodbank has been trying to cope with a tsunami of increasing demand from people trying to find enough money to be able to eat, which has been exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis. In April 2023, the Trussell Trust said that in the past year, more than one million children received emergency food parcels from foodbanks. This is the first time the figure has reached over one million.

Camden Foodbank partners with a wide range of local professionals, such as doctors, social workers, health visitors, the Job Centre, Camden Council and the Citizens Advice Bureau who issue people in need with a foodbank voucher. This voucher allows people in a food crisis to come along to the Foodbank to receive an emergency supply of food for themselves and their children.

Camden Foodbank is in continuous and urgent need of targeted food donations.

Food is donated by schools, businesses, places of worship and individuals to help support the local community. When the donated food comes into the foodbank, volunteers sort, date-check and pack the food into crates ready to be donated to people in food poverty.

When people in a food crisis come into Camden Foodbank with food vouchers, they are given a 3 day emergency supply of a variety of foods as the aim is to give out nutritionally balanced packages.

We then aim to signpost them to relevant services.

Camden School for Girls Collection

We have boxes under the tables in the Sixth Form House foyer and under the stairs in the main school reception. Please bring in any items from the suggested list below. The foodbank will be collecting all donations on Tuesday 19 December.
